Hi, I’m Dr. Alistair King from Central Coast Orthodontics. Worried that orthodontic treatment might be painful?
The good news is that modern orthodontic treatments are designed to be as gentle and comfortable as possible.
Now, it’s true that you may feel some discomfort at certain stages of your treatment. For example, when braces are first placed, or aligners are switched to a new set, you may notice some pressure on your teeth. This is completely normal because it’s a sign that your treatment is working, slowly moving your teeth into the ideal position.
For most patients, this pressure can cause temporary mild tenderness when eating and is usually easily managed with over the counter pain relief and a softer diet.

Likewise, at the start of treatment, you may find that it takes some time for your mouth to get used to the feel of the appliances, so you might choose to place some soft wax (which we provide to you) on any areas that you find irritating.
Your orthodontic journey is all about progress, and we’ll work closely with you to make it as smooth and pain-free as possible. If you have concerns or need tips to ease any discomfort, our team is always here to help. Achieving a beautiful, healthy smile is absolutely worth it—and we’ll be with you every step of the way!
